Bandung — The Directorate General of Research and Development (Ditjen Risbang), Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek) held a coordination meeting in preparation for the Indonesian Industrial Science and Technology Convention (KSTI) 2025 at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) on Monday (7/7).

The meeting, led by the Director General of Research and Development, Fauzan Adziman, served as Kemdiktisaintek's initial step in preparing the KSTI 2025 event. Additionally, this activity also became a good moment for discussions regarding research and development in Indonesia.

Director General Fauzan emphasized the importance of synergy between research, technology, and industrial development. He stated that universities have a strategic role as the main nodes driving national innovation.

"Science and technology are the keys to economic growth. We need to scale up for sustainable industrial development, reduce import dependence, and strengthen national resilience. Our campuses are the main nodes of this process," he said.

One of the main agenda items discussed was the importance of Technology Transfer Office (TTO). The Special Staff of the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (SKM), Oki Earlivan, who was also present, conveyed that Indonesia should follow the good practices of neighboring country Malaysia, which has had an effectively functioning TTO.

"We will build a TTO model, and ITB will be one of its role models. In Malaysia, this model has proven to work. We will try to build it within the next 1-2 years and evaluate the results," explained SKM Oki.

Meanwhile, ITB Rector, Tatacipta Dirgantara, highlighted the difference in perspective between industries in Indonesia and developed countries regarding research and innovation.

"Abroad, research is considered an investment for product development. Meanwhile in Indonesia, many industries still consider research as a cost burden. We need to change this mindset so that research and industry collaboration can be more synergistic," explained Rector Tata.

In line with this, ITB Vice Rector for Research and Innovation, Lavi Rizki Zuhal, emphasized the importance of building research communication that can reach industry and society. He stated that the success of research collaboration depends heavily on mutual understanding of the long-term benefits of science and technology.

"We must convince industry players that science and technology are the keys for them to move up a class. Therefore, it is necessary to develop research communication that is relevant and easily understood by the downstream sector," he concluded.

The collaborative efforts between university research and industry are expected to be realized through the Industrial Science and Technology Convention 2025 and can build a national research and innovation ecosystem.
